Be a Leader

At the beginning of the novel, Ralph is elected leader of the boys. As the story goes on, he tries his best to maintain order and keep the boys organized so that they can all survive, and hopefully be rescued. However, as we know, his efforts do not work out as he would have hoped. In chapter 8, Jack decides to break away from Ralph, calling him a coward, and create his own tribe of hunters.

If you were Ralph, what would you have done or said to try to keep Jack from turning against you? Similarly, what would you have said to the other boys to try and keep them on your side, instead of following Jack into the world of savagery?

Write your response as a comment to this post. Have fun with your answer, but be sure to put some real thought into the importance of trying to keep the boys calm and focused.
