If you were Ralph, what would you have done or said to try to keep Jack from turning against you? Similarly, what would you have said to the other boys to try and keep them on your side, instead of following Jack into the world of savagery?

Well, Ralph didn't do an awful job... he was just nieve. People are mean and don't listen to reason... sometimes little white lies win the battle. I mean look at politicians. If I were Ralph, I would have stood my ground and would have proven the strength I hold. I woulda told the others everything awesome that I had done and everything I had seen in the savage world as to defend why it wasn't right to go. In the end, fighting him would have been the best answer; I mean, they were thinking like survivors...savages. Perhaps, as the saying goes: If you can't beat 'em, join em.
ReplyDeleteI feel bad for Ralph, because he tried to keep the boys together. There wasn't a whole lot that Ralph could have said to keep Jack with the group because Jack wanted to be the leader all along. To keep the other boys on Ralph's side, he could have explained to the boys how much worse it would be if they went to the other group, and maybe tried to compromise with Jake and still have groups, but groups that get along.
ReplyDelete"Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer." Ralph should have made him his co-captain or his assistant to keep Jack close so that he did not turn against him. To keep the boys on his side, he could have rewarded the boys in some way and kept their attention. He can remind the boys of the job he has done so far and that he will continue that job in the future.
ReplyDeleteI would have a conference with the boys and let them know that chaos and rebellion is not the answer. In order to maintain stability and order everyone, including Jack, must work together. When someone wants to be the leader so badly, as Jack did, there is not much a person can do except let them and their followers go. If i were Ralph I would make sure everyone knew how dangerous a split between civilizations could be.
ReplyDeleteI would've tried to get everyone involved to share equally so that everyone got the same all around.
ReplyDeleteI would have encourged them to have a personal conference and talk about their issues.
